Literary Translation Programme


The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary (hereunder (MFA) based on the 241/2016. (VIII.16.) Government Decree and the 11/2022 (IX.6.) MFA Order on the Organizational and Operational Rules of the MFA, within the Balassi Scholarship Programme with Márton Áron Scholarship invites applications for young, foreign translators who are not native speakers of Hungarian in the academic year of 2023/2024 for the LITERARY TRANSLATION PROGRAMME.

The call of application

The call for application is published at:

Steps of application:

  1. Click the field „Fill in application form”.
  2. Fill in the application form and upload the necessary documents:
    • signed, printed statement (format: .pdf), [mandatory document]
    • professional CV in which the applicant describes his / her university studies – studies in Hungarian studies and literary studies in detail – and his / her previous translation experiences and results (format: .doc, .docx), [mandatory document]
    • a list of publications on the applicant’s translations and literary-related writings, or a sample translation of at least 5–10 pages or any desired Hungarian literary text. Please enclose the original text! (format: .doc, .docx), [mandatory document]
    • copy of diploma(s) or in case of a graduate / PhD graduate applicant: copy of transcripts or other certificates (format: .pdf), [mandatory document]
    • work plan: the applicant’s professional plan on his / her translation ideas and long-term goals in the field of literary translation; which area of Hungarian culture he / she intends to focus on in the future (format: .doc, .docx), [mandatory document]
    • at least one recommendation: the opinion of a renowned translator, proofreader, university lecturer or cultural expert on the professional work of the applicant so far (format: .pdf), [recommended document]
    • copy of passport (format: .pdf), [mandatory document]
  3. Finish and submit the application

Please note the following during the application:

  • we recommend using Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari browsers
  • you can save the unfinished application after filling in the form, then later (but during the application period) you can continue to upload the documents or make a correction (using the data received by email)
  • please make sure to upload all the necessary documents by the application deadline
  • please pay attention to the emails you receive to your provided email address because any information regarding the application and application results will be sent to the applicants via email, by the specified date
